This summer I have been experimenting with different ways of painting. I have explored the square format, how to create texture, different color combinations, and how to combine a tiny bit of reality in an abstract, intuitive painting.

Art, Psychology and Emotional Reactions to Climate Change

In the Fall of 2022, I was invited to give a zoom talk on "Art, Psychology, and Emotional Reactions to Climate Change" to a group of psychologists (I was a psychologist once). I'll be giving it again this coming Fall to a group of emeritus faculty. Trying to give a coherent talk about my art and why I make it helped me focus on my artistic intentions.

As a psychologist-artist, I have struggled, with very limited success, to express my emotional reactions to climate change in a way that will both increase awareness of our dire straits and encourage coping and taking action in viewers. I have also tried, with much greater success, to help myself deal with my own emotional turmoil about climate change. Painting provides me a respite from all fears and sorrows so that I am refreshed and committed to environmentalism. Perhaps my art can do the same for some viewers.
